Kirstin will be discussing her book Words in a French Life and how a blogger-cum-self publisher got booked with Simon and Schuster. Words in a French Life is based on the popular blog (French-word-a-day.com) and newsletter. This is a heart-winning collection from an American woman raising two very French children with her French husband in Provence, and carrying on a lifelong love affair with the language. *12 mars à 19h : Rencontre avec LAURE MURAT, auteure de la préface du roman Clair Obscur de NELLA LARSEN (Climats). Nella Larsen, traduite pour la première fois en français, a participé au mouvement intellectuel et artistique nommé Harlem Renaissance ou New Negro Movement qui dans l'entre-deux-guerres explore le concept de culture noire et revendique la spécificité d'une créativité afro-américaine. Dans Clair Obscur (dont le titre anglais Passing, paru en 1929, désigne les personnes métisses qui pouvaient "passer" pour noires et pour blanches mais qui s'identifiaient souvent à la communauté blanche), Claire et Irene, deux jeunes métisses amies d'enfance, suivent des chemins différents dans les Etats-Unis de la ségrégation. Claire s'est mariée avec un Blanc raciste qui ignore ses origines, tandis qu'Irene s'est fait une place dans la petite-bourgeoisie noire. Nella Larsen excèle à explorer les déchirements et contradictions de l'une et l'autre. *15 March 7pm Author and artist Roma Tearne will read from her acclaimed novels Bone China and Brixton Beach and present her Paris sketchbooks to the audience. She will also talk about the importance of memory for migrants and what made her start to write after having been a painter for so many years. Roma is a Sri Lankan-born artist and novelist living and working in Britain. She trained as a painter, completing her MA at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford. For nearly 20 years her work as a painter, installation artist, and filmmaker has dealt with the traces of history and memory within public and private spaces. She has had many exhibitions including ‘Nel Corpo delle cittá’ at the prestigious MLAC (Museo Laboratorio Arte Contemporanea ) in Rome. *18 March 7:30pm : The Paris-based literary journal UPSTAIRS AT DUROC invites you to a reading in honor of France’s Poetry Month, Le Printemps des Poètes, with a variety of work both in English and French (with English translations). The 4 poets participating are: VANNINA MAESTRI, RUFO QUINTAVALLE, ALEXANDRA SASHE and MARK TERRILL. Bios: French poet Vannina Maestri has published many books of poetry, including Vie et aventures de Norton ou Ce qui est visible à l’oeil nu (Editions Al Dante, 2002), Mobiles (Al Dante, 2005), and Il ne faut plus s’énerver (Editions Dernier Télégramme, 2008). Her work has been featured in many journals and anthologies. She was co-editor of the magazine JAVA, as well as participating in radio programs and poetry readings. Rufo Quintavalle was born in London in 1978 and lives in Paris. He is the author of the chapbook, Make Nothing Happen (Oystercatcher Press, 2009), is on the editorial board of Upstairs at Duroc and is currently Acting Poetry Editor for the online magazine, Nthposition. His work has been widely published around the world and was recently nominated for a Puschcart Prize. Alexandra Sashe, born in Moscow in 1976, graduated with a degree in English and Italian linguistics from Moscow University. Her work has been published recently in The Journal, The Delinquent, Equinox, Decanto, Paroles des Jours and La Reata. Mark Terrill shipped out of San Francisco as a merchant seaman to the Far East and beyond, spent time with Paul Bowles in Tangier, Morocco, and has lived in Europe since 1984. He is the author of 16 volumes of poetry, memoir and translations, including the Salvador-Dalai-Lama Express (Main Street Rag, 2008), Superabundance (Longhouse, 2008) and The United Colors of Death (Pathwise Press, 2003). Recently he guest-edited a special German Poetry issue of the Atlanta Review. A three-time Pushcart Prize nominee, he lives near Hamburg, Germany, where he co-edits the poetry journal Full Metal Poem. *19 mars à 19h : Rencontre avec FRANÇOISE DELPHY, traductrice des Poésies complètes d'EMILY DICKINSON (Flammarion). Lecture bilingue. Pour la première fois traduite en France dans son intégralité (fondée sur l'édition définitive publiée aux Etats-Unis en 1999), l'oeuvre de la poète américaine (1830-1886) révèle sa personnalité hors du commun. Celle que ses proches surnommaient "la reine recluse", se mura à l'âge de 30 ans dans la demeure familiale de Nouvelle-Angleterre pour écrire des milliers de poèmes et de lettres. Considérée comme l'un des plus grands poètes américains, elle ne vit, ironie du sort, que six poèmes publiés de son vivant sur les presque deux mille écrits. Cette soirée est l'occasion de la (re)découvrir grâce au travail de Françoise Delphy qui a consacré de nombreuses années à l'oeuvre de Dinckinson. F. *22 March 7pm Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier will be discussing their new translation of The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir which marks the 60th anniversary of publication. They have produced the first integral translation, reinstating a third of the original work. First published in 1949, The Second Sex is a landmark in the history of feminism. Of all the writing that emerged from the existentialist movement, Simone de Beauvoir’s groundbreaking study of women has had the most extensive and enduring impact. It is at once a scholarly work of anthropology and sociology, of biology and psychoanalysis, from the pen of a writer and novelist of penetrating imaginative power. The Second Sex stands, six decades after its first appearance, as the first landmark in the modern feminist upsurge that transformed perceptions of the social relationship of man and womankind in our time. Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier, both American, are longtime residents of France and former teachers at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris. BIOS: Joshua Clover est poète, journaliste, bloggeur et critique et il enseigne dans le département de littérature de l’Université de Californie, Davis. Il a publié The Totality for Kids (U California Press, 2009), Their Ambiguity (2003), et Madonna anno domini (1997) qui lui ont valu plusieurs prix et d’être sélectionné dans Best American Poetry en 1997, 2001 et 2003. Chroniqueur régulier de Film Quarterly, il a publié un petit livre remarquable sur The Matrix (BFI, 2004). Critique musical, il figure dans la sélection de Best Music Writing en 2007 et 2009. De son dernier ouvrage critique, 1989: Bob Dylan Didn’t Have This to Sing About (U California Press, 2009), Greil Marcus a écrit: « Joshua Clover fait mentir le vieux cliché selon lequel écrire sur la musique serait comme danser sur l’architecture. This is the second fascinating collaboration of poetry and art between Dom and his brother Piers Faccini, the painter and musican - Piers will accompany some of the poems on his guitar. The poems are a register of sensations, visions and first impressions, sketches falling in idle moments, stolen between encounters, countries, languages. The life of the spirit as it is lived is the subject of The Parallel Body. Gabrielli’s words ask us to give up the false myths of our civilization for a wholly new recognition of what beauty and love might be. Confessedly writing at an unholy pace, Gabrielli grabs the moment and stamps its essence onto the page. He conquers time by simply obliterating it. Piers Faccini’s images have this same disconcerting and raw immediacy. Dom Gabrielli studied literature at Edinburgh University and prepared for his doctorate in Paris and New York. In Paris, Gabrielli's passion for French literature and thought led him to begin writing, translating, and teaching. His published work includes translations of Battaille and Leiris. In the early 1990's, he left the academic world to travel and devote himself to writing, whilst pursuing various business ventures. English Theatre Berlin is accepting submission for our first-ever 10-MINUTE PLAY COMPETITION to coincide with our 20th anniversary.Anyone with a connection to Berlin/Germany is invited to submit an entry on the theme "English in Daily German Life." You may interpret the theme in any way you'd like, but you've only got 10 minutes to tell the story. The five best plays will each be awarded a prize of 100 Euro.
